Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial herb that’s native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa. It’s been used as a folk remedy for thousands of years to treat digestive, respiratory, and skin conditions.
Marshmallow root has antibacterial activity that may make it effective in wound healing. The anti-inflammatory effect of marshmallow root may also help relieve skin irritation caused by furunculosis, eczema, and dermatitis.
Marshmallow root also has low concentrations of ceramide precursors, a natural hydrator which helps with repairing the skin barrier. For hair, mucilage binds to the proteins to make strands look thicker creating volume. The slippery substance can also be used as hair detangler and conditioner.
